It was first established by King Henry VIII in 1536 but wasn’t open to the public until 1637 and it quickly became a popular location for tourists and residents alike.
Hyde Park is also known for having many peaceful areas with beautiful scenic surroundings as well as notable cultural attractions that command the attention of tourists from around the UK and the world. Once such notable attraction, located in the south west area of Hyde Park, is the Prince Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. It is also located directly north of the Royal Albert Hall.
The memorial was commissioned by Queen Victoria in memory of her late husband. It took more than ten years to complete but was eventually opened in July 1872. Much deliberation took place to finalise the design and construction of the memorial which included a team of architects who produced a number of potential designs. The eventual design finally approved was a canopied statue in a Gothic style produced by George Gilbert Scott.
The memorial consists specifically of a bronze statue with an elaborate stone frieze at its base. This is underneath a large gothic style canopy which itself is covered in decorative artworks referencing various historical figures and themes. The area surrounding the statue and canopy also contains several allegorical sculptures in each corner of the central area.
Public tours take place on the first Sunday afternoon each month allowing visitors a closer look at the Frieze of Parnassus.
